Aardwolf

Excerpt(s) from the book Namibian Wildlife - an alternative guide for the traveller on safari.

"the aardwolf uses a wide tongue for licking grass eating termites off the surface. When the conditions are good an aardwolf can eat 250,000 termites in a night (over a kilogram). It all seems rather a lot of effort, and a lot of sand gets consumed by licking termites off the ground. This is evident in aardwolf droppings that have a high soil and sand content along with lots of bits of termite. The droppings are comparatively large which I guess is a reflection of their diet mainly being non digestible material."

"Aardwolf’s have pretty big ears, and they use these to help find the harvester termites. They can hear the noise of the termites cutting up grass. This noise can be heard by people if they listen carefully."
