Excerpt(s) from the book Namibian Wildlife - an alternative guide for the traveller on safari.

"Baboons are powerful animals. When people take their dogs walking at Avis Dam near Windhoek the braver/stupider dogs will try and chase the baboons. The local vet has a good business sewing up dogs with large gashes and cuts that have inflicted on the dogs by the baboons. The baboons round Avis Dam even come visiting the town. People living in houses adjoining the dam can enter their sitting room to find a baboon at the fruit bowl helping himself! A little time back a baboon got as far as the centre of Windhoek. The story I was told was that he first went to the Ministry of Home Affairs building, from there he moved on to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before ending up at the Parliament building. Here it was established he could not vote, so alas he was shot."

"Baboons make curious foot prints. Most animals have similar front and back footprints since the front and back ‘paws’ are both feet. Baboons have hands rather than feet at the front, and when walking only part of the hand touched the ground to leave a print. All of the back feet touch the ground so baboons leave behind two different sorts of footprint."
