"There
are two sorts of hartebeest in Namibia. The common red hartebeest, and
the rarer tsessebe. Their status partly reflects their diet and
lifestyle. The red can go without water, and will browse as well as
graze. The tsessebe must have water, and just grazes. So you get the
tsessebe in similar places to the sable i.e. the North East parks along
the Caprivi. Tsessebe also occur in western parts of Etosha and on the
Waterberg plateau."
"When looking at a
Hartebeest you might ask “Why the long faces?” Instead ask yourself why
the short necks and you will have the answer. Given most of their food
is grass and that they are fairly tall, they can either get a long neck,
or a long face, to help them reach the ground. I guess that short necks
allow you to go faster than long necks (a personal intuition rather than
scientific conclusion) and if you are living in reasonably open places
then speed helps." |
