"Seeing lions is mainly
done in Etosha. They occur in the other parks along the Caprivi and in Khaudum Game Park but access and viewing are not so easy. Lions do
spread out from Etosha and individuals will head south and west into the
farmlands. The Etosha park staff spend part of their time trying to
chase them back into the park. Further to the west of Etosha there is a
small population that lives in the Skeleton Coast."
"Some of the lodges have
captive lions and offer feeding “experiences” where you can get up close
e.g. Mt Etjo, Okapuka. These can give impressive views of lions tearing
away at a chained up hunks of meat two meters from your face. The left
over bones of previous meals are often scattered all round, and such
experiences may bring to mind the old Roman Games where Lions fought
Gladiators. Don’t assume they are just big domestic cats, on one
occasion visitors had to witness the lion feeder becoming supper for his
captives. People being killed by lions are pretty unusual but some time
back an infamous incident occurred when a lion got into one of the
Etosha camps at night and killed a camper sleeping out in the open." |
