"There
are estimated to be around 400 spotted hyenas in Etosha. A group being
studied there had a territory of around 160 km2 in the dry season when
game was plentiful around the waterholes. In the wet season when the
game density reduces considerably (since the animals can get water
anywhere) the hyena’s group territory doubled in size to compensate."
"The
clans (groups to you and me) in the east of the park have more members
than the clans in the middle of the park. By looking at the pattern of
spots on an Etosha hyena researchers can tell which part of the park the
hyena comes from." |
