Waterbuck

Excerpt(s) from the book Namibian Wildlife - an alternative guide for the traveller on safari.

"Waterbuck occur on some of the game farms. They are popular with hunters and photographers so tend to occur in habitats that are rather unnatural for them e.g. game lodges near Windhoek hundreds of kilometers from any natural watery swamp."

"You need to be careful when skinning a Waterbuck for its meat since they have a very strong smell. This comes from an oily secretion on their fur. Even people are able to smell it some time after a Waterbuck has left a location. If skinned badly the smell can contaminate the meat making it rather unpalatable. There is some discussion as to whether predators like lions also find the smell repugnant, since there are records of them leaving waterbuck kills only partially eaten. An ironic statistic is that lions often have a higher than average success rate killing waterbuck compared to other items of prey. Presumably this is because waterbuck smell so strongly and are therefore easier to find."
