"The
greatest nests have to be those of the sociable weaver. These are
particularly numerous in the Kalahari. The nests are massive and sit in
larger trees. They support colonies numbering hundreds of sociable
weavers. They look like a thatched roof, similar to the thatched roofs
beloved of game lodges and poolside bars round Namibia. The birds keep
building these nests year on year until the sheer weight breaks the
branch they are balanced on. You often find trees with a large broken
branch on the ground which is still partially covered by the old nest.
Above it a new nest is slowly expanding until it will break the next
branch." |
